Rebecca Fender doesn’t remember a time when dance wasn’t a part of her life. Starting at the age of two (thanks, Mom) she has studied ballet, tap, classical and lyrical jazz, modern, Afro-Haitian, and contact improvisation. She was a founding member and director of the University of Alaska Anchorage’s Dance Ensemble from 1997 until 1999 and has been a choreographer for numerous ballet, jazz and modern pieces as well as musicals. She has studied with Steve Primus, Ken Cole, Jill Crosby, Billy Siegenfeld of Jump Rhythm Jazz Project, Heather Cornell of Manhattan Tap, and XSIGHT! Performance Group. After a seven year hiatus from structured dance classes and performing to raise her two girls, Rebecca is honored to have been accepted as a member of Fish Hawk Wing Modern Dance in the Fall of ’08.

If you would like to perform with us at a First Friday Art Walk you must attend a "Dance Improv Crash Course" prior to the first time you perform at First Friday.

Since this is a company rehearsal, there is no fee to attend; donations in any amount by cash, check or used cell phones gladly accepted

Fish Hawk Wing Opens Cafe Press Store

Fish Hawk Wing | Modern Dance is pleased to announce the opening of its new Cafe Press store. We have created several designs based on our dance photography for T-shirts, sweatshirts, mugs, calendars, posters, SIGG bottles, even a teddy bear! Designs include "Nothing Else Matters," "...We Should Dance" quote, "World's Best Dancer/Dance Teacher," and a Fish Hawk Wing ski/snowboard trail sign post.

A portion of proceeds from the sale of items in our Cafe Press store benefit Fish Hawk Wing's mission of making dance more visible and accessible in our Central Oregon community.

Tuesday, March 2: Dance Improv Crash Course

No experience needed

This class is intended as a rehearsal for the March 5 First Friday Art Walk, but anyone who just wants to learn dance improv techniques and does not wish to perform is welcome to attend too.

If you would like to perform with us at the March First Friday Art Walk, and have not done any improv with Fish Hawk Wing previously, this rehearsal is mandatory

No fee; donations in any amount by cash, check or used cell phones gladly accepted

Improv techniques we will use include:

-- Rhythm Circle and/or Guided Imagery warm-up

-- Wheel of Rhythm (a Fish Hawk Wing "original"!)

-- Spoken Word / Props

-- Walls (ok, still working on a better name for that one!)

-- Sculptures

Friday, March 5: First Friday Art Walk, downtown Bend

Dance with us or just join us downtown and cheer us on

We could use volunteers to help with music, props, photos/videos

We need a minimum of 3 dancers to get our improv groove on, so please let me know if you are interested

Mandatory rehearsal for anyone new to FHW Improv, Tuesday March 2 (see above)

Friday, March 12: Modern Dance Workshop

The "Usual" two-hour Modern Dance workshop with warm-up, technique, choreography, and improv.

We will probably be using recorded music for this one as our last drummer is not available; if you know of any musicians who may be interested, please let me know.

Cost: $10 - $25 sliding scale; and/or donations of used handheld electronics for recycling fundraiser

We need a minimum of 5 RSVPs in order to be able to offer Friday Evening workshops; please call or email me by Wednesday, March 10 if you are interested

Yes! There are adult dance classes in Bend, Oregon. Fish Hawk Wing was founded by grown ups who want to have an adults-only dance class and performance opportunities. Our current students and performers range in age from about 25 - 55 and we welcome active adults who want to get out, get up and dance at any age! Our classes and performance opportunities are designed to accomodate all levels of adult dancers, whether it's your first dance class ever or if you are a tried-and-true dance veteran. Come move with us!

Fish Hawk Wing Modern Dance was founded in Bend, Oregon in 2008 in order to create, perform, and teach modern dance and dance improvisation in our Central Oregon community. Fish Hawk Wing seeks to advance the visibility and accessibility of modern dance in our area for the benefit of the local community and also to enhance Central Oregon's reputation as an artistic destination resort area. What is Modern Dance?

Well, that's a good question! "Modern" Dance was originally inspired by dancers in the late 19th - early 20th centuries who rejected the rigidity of ballet. Modern dance pioneers such as Isadora Duncan and Martha Graham incorporated the use of natural movement and breathing into their dance technique. As more dancers began breaking apart from ballet and began forging their own modern dance techiques, the use of ethnic dance movements, partner work and floor work were added to the modern dance repertoire.

While natural breathing and movement were radical notions in the early 20th century, nowadays, you might be hard-pressed to tell the difference between many contemporary ballet and modern dance pieces. In some ways, modern dance and ballet have come full circle, each borrowing techniques from the other to create a vibrant, exciting comtemporary dance genre.

A co-founder of Fish Hawk Wing Modern Dance, Bonnie Walker serves officially as the group's Art Director as well as a Contributing Artist.

Bonnie began dancing at age six and dappled in tap, ballet, jazz and tumbling until age 14. She re-kindled her love of dance when she matriculated at Smith College where she minored in Dance and thus studied dance history, choreography and took studio dance courses in everything from Baroque/Court Dance to Isadora Duncan Dance, with a focus on Modern Dance technique. After graduating from Smith, Bonnie moved to New York City to work in the financial software industry and spent most of her free time taking advantage of the many dance opportunities afforded to New York City residents. After an eight-year hiatus from dancing, Bonnie returned to dancing when she moved to Bend in 2005 and happened upon the Adult Modern class at the Terpsichorean Dance Studio, where she was actually looking for a pre-ballet dance class for her daughter. Unable to resist the temptation, Bonnie signed up for the class and resumed her dancing "career" with the Terpsichorean Modern Dance teacher, Rachael Wilson, and her performance group "White Elephant Project". As Rachael was finishing her Master's degree work and preparing to leave Bend, Bonnie took over as the Art Director for White Elephant Project and her official choreography debut was at the Gotta Dance's Company fund raiser at Tower Theatre, March 2008. Bonnie is very excited to continue the growth of modern dance in Central Oregon as the Director for Fish Hawk Wing.

Gretchen Bennett : contributing artist

Gretchen Bennett holds a BFA in Dance from Cornish College of the Arts and has over 20 years of dance experience in Ballet and Modern (including many years in Central Oregon's own Nutcracker produced by the Central Oregon School of Ballet). Gretchened joined Fish Hawk Wing as a contributing artist in the fall of 2009, she teaches the company's Adult Modern Dance classes and is currently working on a piece called "Teardrop" for the 2009 Bend Dance Project "Spectrum" show.
